“You need to have a dedicated team behind you.”

— Tanvir Shahjahan, Director at BSynergetic

ABOUT

So what do you actually do?

Describing my job in a sentence is actually quite difficult. In all honesty, I do find myself to be winging it a lot of the time, but I tend to do a little bit of everything, from hiring, to sales, social media, cold calling but most importantly making sure everything runs smoothly in my businesses.

What has your career path been?

I studied Law at university, and one day whilst revising for yet another mock exam, I had the idea for BSynergetic and just went with it.

I launched it and I’ve been at it ever since, growing slowly whilst failing and learning through it all.

What is the best part of your job?

The flexibility and freedom that comes with it, and how I am able to (within reason) choose how I live each day.

Why do you do your job?

I feel like I sort of fell into this path, I’ve always had a business mentality I guess, from selling sweets on the playground to buying things cheaper online and selling to people I knew.

One piece of advice for someone starting in your role?

The most important thing for someone that wishes to start their own business is:

Number 1 - realise it’s not as easy as some people portray online

Number 2 - that it won’t happen overnight. You need to have a dedicated team behind you and a good mentor/consultant that you can go to and who can guide you.

DAY IN THE LIFE

Disclaimer: This is actually one of the busiest days I’ve had in the last few weeks. Some days I wake up, make my way to the office and just sit behind a screen and make calls for the whole day. Some days I just gym, eat and sleep.

I had a fairly early start to the day and woke up around 6.30am because following the news of yet another lockdown, I know I was going to have a really busy few days. I woke up, prayed and quickly went to the gym (knowing that gyms were closed from Thursday was so annoying, I was finally seeing progress). I made breakfast and went straight to the office at 8.30am.

My main priority for today was to organise an advert that was originally planned for next week but now had to shoot it before lockdown. The main issue was the actual samples hadn’t come through, so the first thing I did was try to find someone to model in the video.

Initially we wanted to shoot in either North Wales or Scotland, and as the shoot was over Tuesday night and Wednesday morning it was difficult to find someone willing to travel. I put a post out on my socials and started calling around and waited to hear back.

In the meantime, I made my way to our tailor to get the last minute touches done and have the clothes ready and packed for the shoot. Unfortunately due to this lockdown, of course our tailor was extra busy. After going back and forth we reached an agreement and was able to finish everything off last minute which was a massive stress off our shoulders.

After that I drove back to the office and arrived at around 11, I still had to get the location booked and make sure the videographer was still available, which again he wasn’t but we were lucky as the person that usually edits our videos was available and willing to come out and shoot. At this point I took a little break for lunch and gathered my thoughts. It seemed the Ty Amare shoot would actually go ahead, so far so good. I still however had tasks to do for BSynergetic and a consultation call for that afternoon.

After lunch, I started looking at cottages available in Scotland / Snowdonia. Availability was really low, everything was either booked, too small or way above our budget.

Eventually, someone recommended the Cotswolds and I was able to find a place there luckily. We got it booked but still no model or a concrete plan for the shoot. At this point I was forced to take a break and take a call from a client, and we spoke through a new halal perfume brand he wishes to create.

I was able to guide him through most of the early steps and potential pitfalls he may face. I then made my way back to the tailor and quickly went through to check all of the items, and once I was happy I made my way back to the office.

I was slowly decompressing and feeling like it might actually be okay. Luckily, around 5pm I received news from a friend of mine who was able to come and model as well as provide a spoken word piece. I finished off the day by going through my emails, and left just before 6. I was so glad I finally sorted the details of the shoot, fingers crossed it all ran smoothly on Tuesday.

I got home, prayed and watched half an episode of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” which is one of my all time fave shows and if you haven’t watched it you need to.

I left the house to go meet my friend, and we literally just drove around and spoke which really helps me at the end of a long day. We grabbed some food and I made my way home, showered, and within 10/15 mins of getting into bed I knocked out.
